![]() ![]() ![]() Mainly known for his work as an architect, he was also a painter and decorator and he paid attention to colour throughout all his life, promoting its importance in all of the sectors of design through his educational journal activity. Gio Ponti (1891-1979) was one of the first Italian architects who actively dealt with industrial design, combining the classical tradition of craftsmanship with the request for modernity. ![]() The study aims to determine these characteristics by comparing homogeneous elements during the time of publication of the magazine, and, later, their evolution during a longer period, with reference to Domus. The paper aims to analyze the adjustment of expressive codes of project to the communication of the formal concepts expressed through the graphic contents of Stile, which was published during the crucial years of the war and reconstruction, when it was a masthead very important in the contemporary scene, because it was targeted at the general public, and not only to insiders, and so today it is a significant witness about how drawing can reflect the ability of architecture and daily items to adapt themselves to their own time. This activity is also documented by the archive dedicated to himself and by the magazines wich he directed The activity of the Milanese architect, since '36 to a professor at the Politecnico, has been investigated by several published studies, that attest to his importance and the interest not only nationally toward him. Gio Ponti gave a determining contribution to the renewal of Italian architecture and to the creation and affirmation in Italy of the Modern Movement. Gio Ponti’s publishing activity, with magazines Domus (from 1928) and Stile (1941-47), represents a relevant example of relationship between concepts and graphic pattern and of the adjustment of graphical codes to the goals of formal innovation. Before Internet, illustrated magazines were the main tools for spreading opinions and trends, becoming the natural means of propaganda of the different currents that animated the formal renewal of arts in twentieth century.Įspecially in the field of the project, drawing and graphics provided and guaranteed the immediacy of the contents. ![]()
